Cranberry - what is it?
Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is a shrub from the heath family (Ericaceae), whose fruits are popular for their sour taste and health benefits. It is a plant native to North America, where it is widely cultivated, but it is also grown in other regions of the world, including Poland.
Cranberry juice - nutritional composition
Cranberry juice consists mainly of water, is low in calories, and has a low glycaemic index, which makes it ideal for people on a diet -100 ml of sugar-free cranberry juice is only 24 kcal, and it contains many nutrients and bioactive substances! These include, among others, vitamins C, K, E, B6, A, P, niacin, thiamine and riboflavin, as well as fibre, pectins, carotene, or valuable minerals such as calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. Furthermore, cranberry juice contains salicylic acid compounds and many proteins, carbohydrates, antioxidants or flavonoids that are well absorbed by the body.
Cranberry juice -properties:
-
Prevention of urinary tract infections - Cranberries are known to contain compounds that prevent bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract, which can help prevent bladder infections and kidney inflammation.
-
Supporting the immune system - Cranberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants that help strengthen the body's immune system, supporting the fight against infections and diseases.
-
Counteracting digestive system infections - Ingredients contained in cranberries can help prevent gastrointestinal infections, such as Helicobacter pylori, which can lead to stomach ulcers and other gastric problems.
-
Support for oral health - Cranberries can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease by inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for these conditions.
-
Regulation of cholesterol levels - Some studies suggest that regular consumption of cranberries can help lower the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood, which contributes to heart health.
-
Supporting digestion - Cranberries contain dietary fibre, which helps regulate digestive processes, prevent constipation and maintain a healthy intestinal microflora.
Cranberry juice - dosage, use
Cranberry juice is pure, pressed juice directly from the cranberry fruit - without any added water or sugar, therefore its taste will be sour, so direct drinking will not suit everyone. It is most often recommended to drink about 1/4 cup (~60 ml) of juice dissolved in water (~200 ml) up to 2 times a day, but if the sour taste is not a problem, you can dose about 20 ml (half a shot glass) 30 minutes before each meal in the case of digestive system diseases, and even up to 250 ml of juice per day can be consumed when treating urinary tract diseases.
Cranberry juice is also a great addition to winter tea, healthy smoothies or syrups, and can also greatly diversify the taste of homemade liqueurs or wines.
Contraindications: Cranberry juice is not recommended for people using anticoagulants, as well as people with kidney stones and osteoporosis due to the presence of oxalates in the natural composition of cranberries. Additionally, after drinking cranberry juice in excess, it may have a laxative effect, so it is recommended not to exceed the doses mentioned above.
