Honeydew honey – the most difficult to obtain and the noblest Polish honey
Honeydew honey is one of the most expensive and, at the same time, most difficult to obtain honeys on our market. It happens that due to unfavourable weather it does not appear in the offer even for several years in a row! Unlike traditional honeys, it is not made from flower nectar. Honeydew is a sweet secretion of insects (aphids, scale insects) that take sap from coniferous or deciduous trees. Droplets of this substance, rich in sugars and minerals, stick to leaves, branches and bark, from where they are precisely collected and processed by our bees.
Coniferous honeydew honey versus nectar-honeydew honey
In our offer you will find both pure coniferous honeydew honey (coming mostly from fir forests, but also from pine, larch, spruce and thuja), as well as nectar-honeydew honey. The latter is created in seasons when honeydew does not occur in sufficient quantities, and bees supplement the harvest with nectar from surrounding meadows and forest undergrowth.
Nectar-honeydew honey is an equally interesting but cheaper alternative, which wonderfully combines the qualities of honeydew and nectar honeys. Both types have very similar, noble properties. To precisely distinguish and classify them, every beekeeper must examine their so-called electrical conductivity using a conductometer.
Health-promoting properties – what does honeydew honey help with?
Due to its extremely rich composition, this honey is the most desirable product in apitherapy. It has the highest antibiotic and bactericidal activity of all Polish honeys:
- Heart and circulatory system: Used daily, it effectively strengthens the heart and supports the proper functioning of the circulatory system.
- Infections and respiratory tract: It exhibits strong antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties, powerfully supporting the human immune system in fighting diseases.
- Digestion and nervous system: It is recommended for digestive disorders, in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the nervous system.
- Joints: It is known for its valuable anti-rheumatic properties.
Exceptional composition, taste and aroma of forest honeydew
From an organoleptic point of view, real honeydew honey is thicker than nectar honey and much richer in mineral compounds. It contains huge amounts of potassium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulphur, calcium, magnesium and iron. It is also distinguished by a higher content of polysaccharides (e.g. melezitose), and the presence of amino acids and proteins.
Its dark colour and distinct, often resinous or spicy taste make it significantly less sweet than classic honeys. This aromatic complexity arouses great delight among connoisseurs and attracts even those who do not normally like very sweet honey.
